GILAS in Lipa City

Today we conducted an Internet Literacy training for the teachers in Lipa City, Batangas. Lipa City is one of the cities in the Philippines where all its public high schools are fully connected. This is indeed a sign of progress, and we hope that the teachers who attended this training will be able to share what they learned to their fellow teachers, co-workers and students. :)

GILAS in Manila

GILAS has assisted more than 20 schools in the division of city schools (DCS) Manila. We recently finished the training for close to 40 teachers, mostly computer teachers of their respective schools.

The picture above was taken from the Internet Literacy training at Esteban Abada High School in Sampaloc, Manila. Leading the training is Mr. Doy Dulce, a college teacher, and a proud product of DCS Manila (graduated from Manila Science High School).

Nueva Ecija

GILAS goes to Nueva Ecija! It took about 7 days to visit its 96 public high schools. Just want to share with you some photos of our school visits:

Ang mga bibe sa Carranglan

Ang bagong tayong high school sa Brgy. Ligaya, bayan ng Gabaldon

Funky computer cover!

Shoe Rug ang tawag nila dito. It's the first time I've seen something like this being used by students to enter their school's computer lab!

Paaralang Pag-ibig at Pag-asa

This picture was taken at Paaralang Pag-ibig at Pag-asa, the SPED school of DepEd San Pablo City, Laguna. The students here are part of the rondalla, and they are hearing impaired. Indeed, physical challenges are not much of a hindrance for doing something enjoyable and worthwhile. And these students really played beautiful music, I was inspired by it!

Doing Research? Try these links!

While the most popular search engines really help us while doing research, there are times that we get to encounter web sites that are not too kid friendly. So I suggest that we make use of the following free Internet encyclopedias that have already categorized and organized various resources that can be found on the Internet:

1. The Internet Public Library

2. Librarians' Internet Index

3. Infomine (scholarly resources)

4. Awesome Library

5. Wikipedia (generally good except maybe for information on controversial issues and personalities)

6. Citizendium (very much like Wikipedia but the articles posted here are reviewed by experts)

7. Wikipilipinas (has similarities with Wikipedia, Philippine version!)

Happy researching!

Here is a nice and entertaining video from Antipolo National High School as their way of thanking GILAS :)

100% Connected!

As of June 30, 2007, here are the areas where all the public high schools are 100% connected! (unless more schools are added, hehe!)

We hope to add to this list in the coming months...
